What GAD Looks Like

GAD is not a general anxiety diagnosis that’s given when a person’s anxiety symptoms aren’t better explained by something more specific. No, GAD refers to generalized or widespread anxiety. Similarly, GAD refers to anxieties that a person has about many different events, activities, and future unknowns — all at the same time.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

  • People who suffer from GAD tend to be plagued by excessive worry most of the day, nearly every day.
  • They spend significant time thinking about and planning how they’ll deal with certain situations. This excessive thinking is called rumination.
    • Health
    • Future
    • Money
    • Work
    • Family
  • All people with clinical anxiety engage behaviors that are intended to help them feel less anxious and more in control. But for people suffering from GAD, these behaviors tend to be invisible, mental acts, rather than physical compulsions visible to others. The trouble is, the more they ruminate to try and feel better, the more they remain urgently aware of their anxiety. And the cycle continues.

Think of GAD This Way

Think, for example, of a tornado versus a hurricane. The path of destruction left behind by a tornado tends to be comparatively narrow or isolated, but the destruction left behind by a hurricane is usually widespread or generalized. Generalized anxiety disorder causes widespread anxiety or destruction in almost every area of life.

Effective Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

At Kentuckiana Treatment Center for Anxiety & OCD, we teach cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) skills and strategies to manage the anxiety cycle. There’s no such thing as having no anxiety about anything. But there is such a thing as healthy anxiety.

The most important step in how we treat GAD is to teach our patients how to “get out of their head.” Usually, this process takes about only 16 sessions. You will get better and have the proven strategies to maintain your progress over time.
