What Panic Attacks Look Like
Nearly everyone has experienced, or one day will experience, a sudden and severe rush of anxiety — a panic attack. For many people, panic attacks are accompanied by physical sensations:
- Increased heart rate
- Hyperventilation
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Racing heart
- Out-of-body feeling
- Sweating
In fact, some people so associate these sensations with their panic attacks that the mere experience of increased heart rate or dizziness can cause a panic attack to begin. And the unpredictability and frequency of their panic attacks lead to what’s called anticipatory anxiety (or fear of fear).
Avoidance Is Not the Answer
Naturally, some people try to manage their future panic attacks by avoiding activities or situations where they’ve happened in the past. But believe it or not, avoiding panic attacks doesn’t tend to be a very effective strategy for preventing them. For people with panic disorder, life tends to revolve around the anxious prevention of future panic attacks by the management of physical sensations that might cause them.
Reclaim Your Life Today
Break free from panic attacks with proven, evidence-based treatment.
Effective Treatment for Panic Disorder
This is where we come in. At Kentuckiana, we use interoceptive exposure therapy, an evidence-based treatment for panic disorder. We’ll teach you proven strategies and equip you with practical skills to take your life back from your panic attacks.
Rather than avoiding the physical sensations that cause your anxiety, we use a hierarchy of exposure to try and replicate the triggering physical sensation. We work on one trigger at a time so we can teach you how to interact with it differently — until finally there is no anxiety associated with it. Remember, the most important step in how we treat panic disorder is to stop the avoidance behaviors.
What We Treat
In addition to panic disorder, we successfully treat the following diagnoses.
