What PTSD Looks Like

In the past, post-traumatic stress disorder was thought to result only from an extremely dangerous event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or someone else. However, recent research has begun to challenge that idea. Some newer studies seem to show that PTSD can result from even hearing about such events and suggest that psychological trauma can sometimes be the consequence of less extraordinary experiences. If this is true, the question isn’t so much, “Was that traumatizing?” because many kinds of experiences can be. The question is, “Was I traumatized?”

This raises the question: What exactly is PTSD? We could say that PTSD is comprised of four parts:

  1. The experience of a dangerous and distressing event.
  2. The ongoing, intrusive, vivid, and highly anxiety-producing memory of that event.
  3. An associated, heightened awareness of present surroundings.
  4. Pervasive avoidance patterns aimed at both minimizing the vivid and anxiety-producing memory of the dangerous event and at keeping oneself safe from repeated danger.

Therapy for PTSD

While the world is sometimes a dangerous and painful place, there’s effective treatment for the psychological wounds that can result from traumatic experiences. At Kentuckiana Treatment Center for Anxiety & OCD, we use prolonged & repetitive exposure work, the most validated and proven treatment available for PTSD. Within that work, the important step in how we treat is to stop the avoidance behavior patterns by doing the exposure work and processing the traumatic event.

Kentuckiana Treatment Center for Anxiety & OCD offers effective post-traumatic stress disorder treatment services in Kentucky and Indiana.
