What Social Anxiety Disorder Looks Like

Just like its name says, social anxiety disorder causes people to feel extremely nervous in some social situations.

  • People with social anxiety disorder aren’t just introverts. In fact, sometimes they’re not shy at all.
  • What they are is anxious that they might be humiliated or embarrassed in social situations. Social anxiety disorder symptoms often include these types of thoughts or actions:
    • “That person doesn’t like me.”
    • “Those people are talking about me or laughing at me.”
    • They might even experience intrusive images of something embarrassing happening while other people stand around and openly laugh.
    • They check people’s facial expressions to see if they can figure out how they feel about them.
    • They ruminate on conversations and interactions that they’ve recently had.
    • They’ll seek reassurance from loved ones or maybe repeatedly apologize — all in an attempt to (try and) manage their anxiety.

What this means is they’ll suffer through social situations or sometimes avoid them altogether. In some cases that avoidance means that they don’t really see their friends anymore, or perhaps they even work remotely because of their anxiety.

Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder

The good news is we’re here to help. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective treatment. For many people, the most important step is to stop avoiding social situations. They need to initiate plans with friends, keep the plans with friends, get into the room, stay off their phones, engage, and repeat this healthy cycle. The less they avoid social situations and, in the meantime, the more they try and stop checking facial expressions and seeking reassurance, the better they feel.
