Tourette Syndrome Treatment
Anxiety disorders cause varying stages of disruption in your life. At Kentuckiana Treatment Center for Anxiety & OCD, we help you understand how your anxiety disorder works, and more importantly, how to gain control over it. Even if you’ve tried treatment before for Tourette’s without making progress, we encourage you to try again. Our patients typically get better in about only 16 sessions — and maintain it. Tourette’s Symptoms
Tourette syndrome is a common condition that presents in the form of either verbal or motor (i.e., behavioral) tics.
- A tic is often a visible, sometimes socially awkward movement or vocalization. Examples include repetitive blinking, winking, or outbursts of repeated words, yelling, or tongue-clicking.
- While it’s not fully true that tics are involuntary, they are performed to reduce or satisfy involuntary, premonitory sensations. These uncomfortable sensations occur somewhere on the body, like the face or an arm.
- Many people live with untreated, or in some cases, even undiagnosed Tourette disorder. Others present with verbal or motor tics that are either so time-consuming or conspicuous that their lives and functioning are affected by their symptoms. Such individuals often feel ashamed of and isolated by severe Tourette Disorder.
Best Treatment for Tourette Syndrome
At Kentuckiana, our patients have a high level of success in managing Tourette’s with stimulus control and competing response treatment. The most important step in how we treat Tourette’s is to stop the tics, not the premonitory sensation. What most people find is that the longer they can tolerate their uncomfortable premonitory sensations, the easier it is for them to resist performing their tics. And the less often they perform verbal or motor tics, the weaker the sensations eventually become, allowing them to regain control of their lives. We’ll teach you the tools to do this.
